The Martindale-Hubbell Peer Review Ratings are a way to help people searching for legal aid discover and select the right person to represent them. The rating given to the lawyers are based on how well the lawyer performs in five distinctive areas.

  • Legal Knowledge: How well the lawyer knows the laws that govern his main area of practice.
  • Analytical Capabilities: This describes how well the lawyer applies himself to a case
  • Judgement: How well the lawyer presses the key points that drive the outcome of a given case.
  • Communication Ability: The lawyer must be able to speak clearly and knowledgeably
  • Legal Experience: The amount of experience a lawyer has in his specified area of practice.

All of these are based on a grading scale that ranges from 1 to 5. 1 being the lowest grade and 5 being exceptional. These grades decide the appropriate rank to be used by the lawyer. The ranks are broken down into three different groups. AV, BV, and Rated. Though these ratings help decide just how knowledgeable and dedicated a lawyer is compared to another, take note that being rated at all means the lawyer follows a strict rule of ethics.

  • AV Preeminent (4.5-5): This rating is the highest possible, standing as a monument to the fact that a lawyer is seen by his peers to perform at the highest level of professionalism.
  • BV Distinguished (3.0-4.4): BV Distinguished is an impressive rating for lawyers still building their experience. BV Distinguished is a highly respectable mark for a lawyer.
